TUM SustainabilityDay 2024: A festival of inspiration and innovation (June 24)

TUM Sustainability Day, on June 12, 2024

"We walk the talk" - TUM lives sustainability

Researching sustainability is not enough - you also have to live it.
On June 12, 2024, the Technical University of Munich set an example with the Sustainability Day a strong signal: The entire TUM community showed how it is actively contributing to a sustainable future with ideas, research and projects.

Focus on mobility: the future is on the move

MCube curated the mobility area and, together with strong partners, presented forward-looking projects in the Mobility Hof Garching. Included:

  • TUM Hyperloop
  • STEAM bus for education & transformation
  • TUfast Eco Team with lightweight electric vehicle
  • EDGAR - the autonomous shuttle of the future

Practice makes perfect: Young explorers on tour

The 3rd grade of an elementary school explored exciting mobility innovations with Oliver May-Beckmann - and were visibly impressed. A day that not only showed technology, but also visions of the future.

Virtual mobility & playful urban planning

  • VR experience in the STEAM bus: a journey into the public transport of tomorrow
  • Road construction kit at the aqt project: participants design their dream road
  • Bolt Little Big Carpet: Experience urban design in a playful way
  • Curtain of wishes: Capturing ideas for the future of mobility

Simulation & Strategy: Data-based mobility

TUM President Prof. Dr. Thomas F. Hofmann visited the DatSim mobility table, which simulates the traffic planning of tomorrow based on real data. In conversation with Markus Mohl, head of Munich's digital twin, it became clear that data-driven decisions are the key to smart mobility.

Nico Rosberg Challenge: start-up spirit for sustainability

At the same time, 230 students developed sustainable business models in the Nico Rosberg Challenge.
🌟 Highlight: ParkBuddys - an innovative system for reducing parking search traffic.

Thanks & Outlook

A heartfelt thank you to all those involved for their commitment, their ideas and their curiosity. The TUM Sustainability Day 2024 was more than just an event - it was a living laboratory for change. We look forward to the road ahead - and the innovations that will emerge from it.

The lessons learned from the first MCube funding phase show which factors really drive projects forward - and where typical barriers arise.

Creating transparency, proving impact, sharpening strategies - the new indicator guide supports precisely this.

For the first time in this format, students made their way to three European cities. They went to Stockholm, Tallinn/Helsinki and Barcelona.

This time, mobility in the cities of Ljubljana, Genoa and Utrecht was examined.

What is MOSAIQ?
Imagine something: There is more space for people. The streets have more trees and plants. Everyone can get around better. That's how your Schwabing-West district could be in the future. How would you like your district to be? We want to talk to you about it!

The project is called MOSAIQ. MOSAIQ is a research∙project. MOSAIQ means: Mobility and urban climate in the future city∙part. The Technical University of Munich is leading the project.

What is MOSAIQ about?
MOSAIQ wants to make the streets in the city∙part more beautiful. People should feel comfortable there. There should be more space. For meetings and plants, for example. You can help decide what is tried out in the Stadt∙teil. The ideas come from you. Some ideas will be tried out on the streets for a certain period of time.
The aim of MOSAIQ is to make urban districts good places to live.
At the same time, the climate in the city should improve. And people should be able to move around the city easily.

What is happening in the district?

  • In the year 2025:
The people in the district can participate. They can express their ideas. There are discussions, surveys and meetings. Researchers are also starting their work.
  • In the year 2026:
    Some ideas are tried out.
They are moved around the streets for a certain period of time.
  • In the year 2027:
    The results are evaluated.
Consideration is given to how things can continue∙.
