What economic contribution does cycling actually make? This question is politically relevant, but methodically difficult to answer uniformly so far. With the project ValueBike therefore, MCube Consulting is developing an evaluation approach designed to systematically capture the macroeconomic benefits of cycling mobility and the bicycle economy.
The project runs from July 2026 to April 2027 and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport using funds for the implementation of the National Cycling Plan funded. The project sponsor is Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM) while MCube Consulting takes charge of the execution and coordination. The project is supported by the technical expertise and networks of the German Bicycle Industry Association and of the general German General Cyclists' Club (ADFC).
The focus is on the development of a scientifically sound yet practical methodology. Cycling will not only be considered as a transport performance. The economic significance of the bicycle industry and other macroeconomic effects of cycling will also be included in the evaluation.
MCube Consulting is developing a consistent evaluation framework for this purpose, which brings together different impact areas and makes transparent which assumptions and data bases lie behind the results.
An important component is the exchange with stakeholders from practice and the bicycle industry. The expertise of the ADFC and ZIV helps to align the methodology closely with real-world issues and to incorporate relevant data, perspectives, and use cases at an early stage.
For municipalities, federal states, and the federal government, the question frequently arises as to what benefits investments in various forms of mobility generate. In the case of cycling, effects have often been viewed separately in the past or only partially captured in monetary terms.
MehrwertRad is intended to establish a more reliable basis here. The goal is not to reduce political decisions to a single metric. Rather, economic interrelationships are to be made more transparent and thus better integrated into strategic, planning, and financial decisions.
The developed approach is therefore designed to be usable beyond the specific project. Applications are conceivable in political strategies, economic analyses, or the evaluation of cycling measures and investments.
For MCube Consulting, the focus regarding MehrwertRad is on combining scientific methodology with concrete application. Complex causal relationships are processed in such a way that they actually become usable for administration, politics, and other stakeholders.
By the project's completion in April 2027, this will create not only an analysis of the economic value of cycling, but rather a transferable valuation approach that can help to more soundly assess the importance of cycling in the mobility system in the future.

The project is called MOSAIQ. MOSAIQ is a research∙project. MOSAIQ means: Mobility and urban climate in the future city∙part. The Technical University of Munich is leading the project.
What is MOSAIQ about?
MOSAIQ wants to make the streets in the city∙part more beautiful. People should feel comfortable there. There should be more space. For meetings and plants, for example. You can help decide what is tried out in the Stadt∙teil. The ideas come from you. Some ideas will be tried out on the streets for a certain period of time.
The aim of MOSAIQ is to make urban districts good places to live.
At the same time, the climate in the city should improve. And people should be able to move around the city easily.
