MOSAIQ is one of nine projects in the second phase of the MCube research cluster - the "Munich Cluster for the Future of Mobility in Metropolitan Regions". The cluster of over 80 partners from science, business, society and administration under the leadership of the Technical University of Munich is funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR).
MOSAIQ stands for "Mobility and Urban Climate in Future Neighborhoods". In this project, our team is working on the design of liveable neighborhoods in Munich. We want to develop innovative and holistic approaches to sustainably improve mobility, the urban climate and the quality of life in neighborhoods. Together with citizens and local stakeholders, we develop solutions to make public spaces more vibrant and sustainable.
The project will be implemented in several phases:
You can find more detailed information on the schedule HERE.
In the MCube MOSAIQ innovation project, we are committed to working with citizens and other local stakeholders to turn neighborhoods into places that meet the challenges of climate change and urban mobility in scarce public space.
The innovation project focuses on the following areas:
These focal points have the following in common:
Space in cities is limited. That is why we are focusing on holistic approaches to improve mobility solutions, increase the quality of life in public spaces and reduce the effects of summer heat stress and heavy rainfall events. This is how we make our urban districts future-proof. This means that neighborhoods will adapt to the changing climate and thus remain liveable in the future.
MCube is the "Munich Cluster for the Future of Mobility in Metropolitan Regions". As a transfer and application cluster, we develop scalable solutions for the mobility of the future together with over 80 partners from science, business, administration and civil society. The cluster is headed by the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR). The focus is on key mobility topics such as autonomous driving, electromobility, smart infrastructures, legal frameworks and the livable transformation of public spaces.
The areas in the Schwabing-West and Moosach districts, i.e. the exact areas in which MCube MOSAIQ will be active, were selected by the project team taking into account other projects in Munich and on the basis of technical criteria defined by the project team. The selection criteria included
Another important criterion was that the district committees support MCube MOSAIQ and are willing to help shape the content of the innovation project.
In MCube MOSAIQ, individual ideas are implemented for a limited period of time and on a trial basis. The ideas are developed together with residents and other local stakeholders in the ideas forum [Link to ideas forum]. The aim is to jointly develop ideas for tangible, temporary projects for public (street) space.
As part of the approval process for temporary projects, the project team prepares the necessary documents and obtains the necessary approvals. As part of the approval process, the district committee must give its final approval to the selected projects and their implementation.
The implementation locations in the neighborhood are determined in a multi-stage process. The basis for the decision is:
The exact implementation locations and the measures have not yet been determined, as these will be jointly with the citizens*and other local stakeholders will be developed and elaborated. One thing is certain: a trial implementation of the ideas that will be jointly developed in 2025 for several months to a year will take place in public spaces in 2026.
Within the innovation project, measures are implemented for a limited period of several months to a year - depending on the jointly developed ideas. The project is scientifically monitored on an ongoing basis. Recommendations can then be made for permanent implementation after the innovation project. For example that successful ideas and measures are re-established and maintained in the long term. Permanent implementation is not planned as part of the project. This can be based on recommendations from the project after completion of the project, but requires a separate planning and approval process.
On June 7, 2024, the City Council decided that the City of Munich would participate as a project partner in the MCube projects of the second funding phase (meeting document 20-26 / V 13183), thus approving the implementation of the MCube MOSAIQ innovation project.
The location of the MCube MOSAIQ innovation project in the districts of Schwabing-West and Moosach was decided by the relevant district committees. At its plenary meeting on May 12, 2025, the Schwabing-West district committee decided to work together with the MCube MOSAIQ innovation project. The Moosach district committee decided to implement the project at its plenary meeting on June 16, 2025.
You can get involved in a variety of ways in different formats - every contribution is important. Here you will find an overview of the participation offers.
How do we want to live in the city in the future? This question concerns us all. MCube MOSAIQ thrives on the participation of everyone in the neighborhood. You can get involved in a variety of ways in different formats - every contribution is important. Together, we can develop solutions that meet as many different needs of local residents and stakeholders as possible.
You can get involved in each phase with different contributions that require different levels of effort. From a tip to the project team to a concern written down in the neighborhood discussion to an idea that you can develop into a feasible project in the ideas forum, there is something for everyone.
1. ideas
In the call for ideas in late summer 2025, you can submit your ideas for your neighborhood - within the framework of the rules and conditions of participation. These ideas are more than just concerns, they contain concrete proposals for the use and distribution of space in public areas. The rules and conditions of participation will be announced at the start of the call for ideas.
2. concerns
A concern can be an issue that is important to you, a need that you have or a problem that is bothering you. Concerns are collected in the neighborhood talks or on our website.
Your concerns serve as inspiration and points of reference for the second phase of the Ideas Forum, the Project Forge. The extent to which these concerns are taken up is decided solely by the participants in the project forge.
You can track whether your request has been taken up using the individual codes. You will receive this as soon as you submit a request.
3. instructions to the project team
Notes are feedback that is addressed directly to the project team. A tip can be something the project team should pay attention to, feedback you would like to leave or a comment you would like to make. They can help the team to respond to the needs in the neighborhood. Comments are evaluated directly by the project team.
In the Glossary.
In MOSAIQ, we are interested in how we can shape urban mobility and public space in the neighborhood in such a way that we can meet the growing challenges in the city together and fairly.
For example, we want to know:
In MOSAIQ, we collect data using a mix of methods through surveys, censuses and the observation of participation in the implementation process and evaluate these using scientific methods. From this, recommendations can be derived for the long-term design of the project neighborhoods. The results not only contribute to scientific knowledge, but also have an impact at other levels: Civil society, business, administration and politics.
1. civic engagement
It is important to us that the involvement of citizens and initiatives is encouraged. There are already many offers and ideas in Munich on how you can get involved in shaping your city. We bring these together for you in MOSAIQ.We also offer workshops to collect and pass on further knowledge from many disciplines and to form alliances.
2. company
We are testing what opportunities the future quarter holds for new business models. On the one hand, we are testing these with companies and start-ups that already exist, such as our project partners evhcle, Climateflux and VePa. On the other hand, we are looking at which ideas can be developed for new companies. We are supported in this by UnternehmerTUM.
3. administration and politics
We are interested in how urban and neighborhood development can benefit from the findings of MOSAIQ in the long term. To this end, there is an exchange with Munich stakeholders from the fields of urban design and mobility, science, city administration and politics. We also share the results and findings with other cities in a supra-regional city forum.
In MOSAIQ, we collect and analyze data using a mix of methods through surveys, censuses and by looking at participation in the implementation process. In addition to traditional research methods, we also use participatory formats in which in which everyone can get involved. You can find an overview of the research formats HERE.
We carefully evaluate the data collected in this way using scientific methods and gain insights from it. We share the results with you. We also bring important findings directly back to the neighborhood, for example at exhibitions or discussions where we mirror the results with the personal impressions of local people. Other evaluations require more time.
Science helps us to better understand our world. There are various principles that guide science so that outsiders can also understand how results were obtained and how they should be classified. These include, for example, impartiality, comprehensibility and transparency. It is also important that researchers check whether their results measure what they are supposed to measure (validity), whether other people can also arrive at these results (objectivity), whether they can achieve these results repeatedly (reliability) and whether the results can withstand criticism.
The aim of research is to gain new knowledge, answer questions and solve problems. To this end, questions are systematically investigated and data is collected and analyzed. In this way, researchers help us to better master future challenges - because we have a better understanding of what lies ahead of us and we we have to deal with it. Research therefore describes the process of how we gain new insights.

What is MOSAIQ?
Imagine something: There is more space for people. The streets have more trees and plants. Everyone can get around better. That's how your Schwabing-West district could be in the future. How would you like your district to be? We want to talk to you about it!
The project is called MOSAIQ. MOSAIQ is a research∙project. MOSAIQ means: Mobility and urban climate in the future city∙part. The Technical University of Munich is leading the project.
What is MOSAIQ about?
MOSAIQ wants to make the streets in the city∙part more beautiful. People should feel comfortable there. There should be more space. For meetings and plants, for example. You can help decide what is tried out in the Stadt∙teil. The ideas come from you. Some ideas will be tried out on the streets for a certain period of time.
The aim of MOSAIQ is to make urban districts good places to live.
At the same time, the climate in the city should improve. And people should be able to move around the city easily.
What is happening in the district?
