Germany's Mobility Transition in Focus: Opportunities and Challenges for a Connected and Climate-Neutral Future

The transformation of the mobility sector in Germany is in full swing. Increasing climate goals, technological progress, and geopolitical uncertainties are intensifying the pressure to act. At the same time, the strategic direction remains partly unclear. Against this background, our sector study examined which developments are shaping the market and where concrete opportunities lie for business, politics, and research.

Project Context

The study was commissioned by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Germany and conducted by MCube Consulting. It is part of a long-term public-private partnership aimed at promoting sustainable mobility between the two countries. The objective was to identify market potentials, key players, and structural barriers, and to derive strategic recommendations for action from these findings.

How the study was conducted

The analysis is based on a combination of desk research, systematic market analysis, and 13 expert interviews from industry, academia, and the public sector.

Twelve sub-markets were investigated along key transformation fields such as digitalization, alternative powertrains, and infrastructure. Building on this, four particularly relevant topics were analyzed in depth: intelligent infrastructure and V2X, data-based services, vehicle-to-grid, and battery-electric commercial vehicles.

  • The mobility transition is primarily driven by digitalization, electrification, and new data-based business models.
  • Particularly high potentials lie in V2X infrastructure, software services, smart charging, and electric trucks
  • Regulatory uncertainties and a lack of standardization are hindering investment and scaling.
  • The expansion of charging and energy infrastructure remains a central bottleneck
  • The integration of energy and mobility systems (e.g., V2G) creates new markets but is complex and highly dependent on regulation.
  • Germany offers great market opportunities, while at the same time there is high competitive pressure from established players.

Recommendations for action

  • Create clear and long-term political frameworks to increase investment security
  • Advance standardization and regulation at the European level, particularly in the data and V2X sectors
  • Targeted promotion of pilot projects and test fields to bring technologies to market faster
  • Systematically expand cooperation between industry, research, and the public sector.
  • Strategically and integratedly develop charging and energy infrastructure
  • Support research and development in a targeted manner, especially in key technologies such as batteries and software

The study was created by MCube Consulting (TU Munich). The project team consisted of Dr.-Ing. Daniel Schröder, Felix Waldner, and Timo Natemeyer.

Conclusion

The mobility transition in Germany offers significant opportunities for innovation and collaboration. At the same time, the study shows that progress strongly depends on clear political frameworks and functioning partnerships. Only by bringing together technological, regulatory, and economic developments can the full potential be realized.

The project is called MOSAIQ. MOSAIQ is a research∙project. MOSAIQ means: Mobility and urban climate in the future city∙part. The Technical University of Munich is leading the project.

What is MOSAIQ about?
MOSAIQ wants to make the streets in the city∙part more beautiful. People should feel comfortable there. There should be more space. For meetings and plants, for example. You can help decide what is tried out in the Stadt∙teil. The ideas come from you. Some ideas will be tried out on the streets for a certain period of time.
The aim of MOSAIQ is to make urban districts good places to live.
At the same time, the climate in the city should improve. And people should be able to move around the city easily. 

What is happening in the district?

  • In the year 2025:
    The people in the district can participate. They can express their ideas. There are discussions, surveys and meetings. Researchers are also starting their work.
  • In the year 2026:
    Some ideas are tried out.
    They are moved around the streets for a certain period of time.
  • In the year 2027:
    The results are evaluated.
