Real-world laboratories, public engagement and co-creation

Participation for a fair mobility transition

Involving the population in the planning and implementation of mobility projects is essential for our research, as we want to increase their acceptance, success and fair distribution of benefits. New social approaches, behaviours and organizational models support the transition to sustainable, efficient and people-centred mobility. We focus on the needs, commitment and participation of all people in order to ensure fair and inclusive mobility design. This takes place in our numerous real-world laboratories.

We place a particular focus on justice: innovations should not only be technologically advanced, but also inclusive, sustainable and fair. This means taking different perspectives into account, reflecting power imbalances and distributing the benefits of new developments fairly. Only in this way can a sustainable and socially responsible transformation succeed.

Projects

In our project "Effective participation for mobility innovation", we are integrating the topics of participation and communication across the cluster.

The project investigates how various car-sharing models at residential locations can offer an attractive alternative to the little-used private car.

The project aims to influence mobility behavior on the TUM research campus in Garching through digital and physical interventions.

We are developing and testing an autonomous vehicle for use in urban and rural real-world laboratories.

We are investigating the potential impact of innovative Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) offerings such as mobility budgets and mobility bundles in real-world laboratories for everyday mobility and major events.

With MOSAIQ, we are committed to environmentally friendly mobility, participation, social inclusion, a high quality of life and climate-resilient urban districts in Munich.

We have tested in Munich neighborhoods how car-reduced spaces can contribute to a more liveable city through participation, research and real-world laboratories.

As part of the project, we worked collaboratively and transdisciplinarily with actors from the field in order to gain concrete knowledge for a just mobility transition.

STEAM aims to analyze and design future vehicle usage concepts for passenger and freight transport in a holistic and user-centered manner.

With the help of experiments and real-world laboratories, we have developed sustainable mobility solutions and driven forward the mobility transition in urban areas.

What is MOSAIQ?
Imagine something: There is more space for people. The streets have more trees and plants. Everyone can get around better. That's how your Schwabing-West district could be in the future. How would you like your district to be? We want to talk to you about it!

The project is called MOSAIQ. MOSAIQ is a research∙project. MOSAIQ means: Mobility and urban climate in the future city∙part. The Technical University of Munich is leading the project.

What is MOSAIQ about?
MOSAIQ wants to make the streets in the city∙part more beautiful. People should feel comfortable there. There should be more space. For meetings and plants, for example. You can help decide what is tried out in the Stadt∙teil. The ideas come from you. Some ideas will be tried out on the streets for a certain period of time.
The aim of MOSAIQ is to make urban districts good places to live.
At the same time, the climate in the city should improve. And people should be able to move around the city easily.

What is happening in the district?

  • In the year 2025:
The people in the district can participate. They can express their ideas. There are discussions, surveys and meetings. Researchers are also starting their work.
  • In the year 2026:
    Some ideas are tried out.
They are moved around the streets for a certain period of time.
  • In the year 2027:
    The results are evaluated.
Consideration is given to how things can continue∙.
