Review of Speaker Series #20 - Olympia as a driver of development? (July 25)

Munich: Let's talk about the Olympics

Full house on 24.07.2025 at the Deutsches Museum Verkehrszentrum, 120 guests, five strong impulses - and one central question:
How can Munich's Olympic bid have a long-term impact - instead of fizzling out in two weeks?

If Munich bids for the Olympics again, it won't do so arbitrarily - but with vision, attitude and a clear plan. Just like in 1972, or Barcelona 1992 and Paris 2024:
With your own style. With measurable goals. And with a city that uses the Olympics to shape the future - not just to celebrate sport.

This was the topic of our event as part of the MCube Speaker Series. And the discussion showed:
The Olympics can work - if we think locally, shape it boldly and anchor it intelligently.

5 strong impulses from the discussion:

Alexandre A. Vulic (Consul General of France):
Paris 2024 shows what the Olympics can achieve - if it strengthens urban policy:

  • 6.6 million guests (of which 3.1 million from abroad - but also: over half French!)
  • Expansion of public transport, new cycle paths, green urban spaces
  • The Seine becomes swimmable again
  • Conclusion: The Olympics as a catalyst for sustainable urban development - not just for two weeks.

Ingwar Perowanowitsch (journalist & mobility expert):
The mobility turnaround in Paris is a reality:

  • Full bike rushhours
  • New urban forests
  • Excellent pedestrian infrastructure
  • Conclusion: "An Olympic cycle path network that stays" - that's what he wants for Munich.

Roman Deininger (Süddeutsche Zeitung):
Munich won the bid in 1972 because it was courageous - with a concept that set new standards.
Conclusion: Today there is another opportunity: The Olympics are changing - Munich can actively shape this change.

Dr. Nadia (Nina) Alaily-Mattar (TUM):
The Olympics work - if they are embedded in a long-term strategy.

  • Away from PR promises
  • Towards realistic analyses
  • Conclusion: The application itself can be an impetus for transformation.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Gebhard Wulfhorst (TUM):
The Olympics can accelerate existing projects - if Munich boldly combines them:

  • Expansion of public transport
  • Seamless cycling infrastructure
  • New public spaces
  • Conclusion: New meeting places for the people of Munich.

And what does the public think?

Finally, we asked: "To what extent do you think the Olympic Games still have a positive impact on Munich today?"
Average rating: 4 out of 5 points
Conclusion: A clear signal: the trust is there - if we rethink the Olympics.

Our conclusion: As in 1972, the Olympics can once again become a project of urban society.
Because it's not the IOC that decides what the Olympics in Munich will look like. We do.

If we make consistent use of this opportunity, the Olympics can become a source of strength for a sustainable, innovative and liveable future for Munich. far beyond the games.
