Munich is considering a new Olympic bid - and many are asking themselves: What can such an event achieve today?
A look back shows: quite a lot. The 1972 Games changed Munich forever - with new subway lines, the Olympic Park as the heart of the city and the Olympic Village, which is still considered a pioneering residential area today. The Olympics were more than just a sports festival - they were an urban development booster.
But in recent decades, the Olympics have lost their luster: gigantism, billion-dollar costs and questionable prestige projects have deterred many candidate cities.
Then came Paris '24 and, in the spirit of Munich '72, proved that things could be done differently: sustainable, integrated, modern - with a clear focus on quality of life. Paris showed how the Olympics can become a catalyst for a greener, fairer city.
Can we follow this path again in Munich? What concrete lessons can we learn from Paris?
