ReMIX

Responsible Mobility Innovation and Experimentation

What are we doing?

Pooling expertise and imparting know-how for sustainable cities and municipalities

For a successful mobility transformation, players from cities, companies and science must work together, although in practice they follow different logics of action. The decisive factors in this interaction are governance strategies on the one hand and experimental spaces on the other.

Governance comprises clear rules, structures and processes that enable stakeholders to make joint decisions and tackle social challenges. Our research supports cities and municipalities in the cluster in making mobility socially just, ecologically compatible and economically viable. In doing so, we specifically take into account the characteristics of urban and rural regions.

Experimental rooms are places where new technologies are tested under real conditions. ReMIX investigates such real-world laboratories in the MCube to find out under what conditions they work, where difficulties arise and how successful approaches can be implemented on a broad scale. We accompany these experiments methodically and develop practical recommendations on how cities and municipalities can organize such real-world laboratories responsibly and sustainably.

How do we do it?

We work with a holistic approach that provides scientific knowledge, concrete tools and practical experience:

Guide to integrated mobility planning

We are developing a practice-oriented guide for integrated mobility planning and data governance in municipalities and metropolitan regions. This guide is based on experience and concrete case studies from the MCube cluster and offers municipalities support in the implementation of mobility solutions.

Mobility experiments atlas

In the Mobility Experiments Atlas, we document mobility innovations and real-world laboratory experiences from Munich and other regions in Europe. The atlas is intended to support local authorities in planning and implementing their own experiments by making tried-and-tested approaches, methods and results accessible.

Political dialog and knowledge exchange

We regularly organize events such as the "Political Breakfast" and the "ReMIX Dialogue" to facilitate a direct exchange between science, administration, business and politics. The aim is to jointly discuss challenges and solutions in mobility policy and develop practical recommendations for action.

Coaching for real laboratories

We offer a coaching program for mobility projects and real-world laboratories to support them in carrying out their experiments. This involves the responsible planning and implementation of new technologies and concepts as well as the systematic consideration of ethical, social and ecological aspects.

European case studies

We analyze good practice examples from various European metropolitan regions. These case studies are intended to show which mobility strategies and governance models have been successfully implemented and what other municipalities can learn from them.

Data governance in practice

We develop specific recommendations for the responsible use of mobility data. These recommendations help municipalities to ensure transparency, data protection and effective data processing in urban and mobility planning.

Our work provides municipalities with scientifically sound findings and practical tools to implement responsible and innovative mobility solutions.

Who does it?

ReMIX is a joint social science integration project of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech). On the TUM side, the Chair of Innovation Research and the Chair of Environmental and Climate Policy are particularly involved, while acatech contributes its extensive expertise in governance practice and policy advice. Together, we cooperate closely with municipal administrations, companies and civil society actors in the MCube cluster to develop practical solutions for sustainable mobility.
